I'd be happy to think about that character as They, or whoever they are. I don't care if people want that to be their pronoun and stuff, but for people with dyslexia this is an accessibility issue. Especially if the same paragraph is also referencing an actual group of people. I have heavy dyslexia, and it's making it pretty much impossible for me to comprehend who is talking about who.
